Joining & Donating FAQs

  • Please email team@focus4democracy.org to receive invitations for our Zoom events. In your email, please tell us how you heard about Focus for Democracy.

  • Click here for our donation instructions to Focus for Democracy. To donate directly to our current recommended organizations, please email team@focus4democracy.org for specific instructions.

  • Our recommendation usually includes a tax-deductible and a non tax-deductible option. Donations to 501c3 organizations are usually tax-deductible, but please consult with your tax advisor to verify your donation’s eligibility. Donations to 501c4 and 501(c)(5) organizations are NOT tax-deductible.

  • Tax-deductible 501(c)(3) organizations are not permitted to support or oppose any candidates. They may, however, engage in and support nonpartisan programs to encourage people to register and to vote, to help them understand the importance of voting, making a plan to vote, and how to engage in their communities. These efforts are all strictly nonpartisan and may be focused on historically underrepresented voters. Contributions are tax-deductible.

501(c)(4) and (5) organizations, on the other hand, may engage in unlimited lobbying, including supporting and opposing ballot measures, and even support or oppose candidates. Donations to these entities are not tax-deductible.

  • For most organizations, non-tax deductible dollars are harder to raise because foundations and DAFs cannot give to them. So for donors to whom a tax deduction isn’t especially valuable, we recommend giving non-tax deductible funds.

For many, however, a deduction can be valuable. If giving to a tax-deductible 501(c)(3) allows you to give at least 30% more than you otherwise could, then we recommend you do so.

There will be circumstances where non-tax-deductible funds are especially needed and in those cases, we will let you know that.

  • Tax-deductible 501(c)(3) organizations are not permitted to support or oppose any candidates. They may focus their work on particular demographic groups (such as people of color) even if data show those groups vote heavily Democratic, but they can’t pick their targets on the basis of who they will support. The groups we support adhere scrupulously to that requirement.

501(c)(4) and (5) organizations can spend your contribution to urge voters to support a particular candidate or to work at registering and turning out only people who they believe will vote for their favored candidates.

Unless contributing to the 501(c)(3) will enable you to contribute at least 30% more than you otherwise could, we would suggest contributing to the (c)(4) or (5) organizations because non-deductible funds are harder for them to raise.

  • Yes! Matching grants play a key part in our fundraising efforts. The stakes in our country are so high that some people are inspired to put up large donations to inspire others to donate, thus doubling the impact of their contributions. Contact us at team@focus4democracy.org if you’re considering a matching grant.
