About Focus for Democracy FAQs
-
The entity we shorthand as Focus for Democracy really has three parts:
Focus for Democracy Action is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to strengthen democracy by evaluating and supporting non-partisan programs, while a smaller portion of our funding and recommendations is directed toward programs that effectively support pro-democracy candidates.
Focus for Democracy Fund is non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization to which contributions are deductible.
In addition, a freestanding 501(c)(4) organization called Focus for Democracy Advocacy Group can accept non-tax-deductible contributions of appreciated assets, though the resulting funds are subject to extra restrictions.

Focus for Democracy does not subtract anything for our evaluation costs or overhead from the funds you contribute to our recommended organizations. Key supporters separately cover those operating costs so you can be assured that all funds donated will go to the programs we’ve recommended. We generally recommend that you give directly to the recommended organizations rather than to Focus for Democracy. For those funds that do go to Focus for Democracy Project, our fiscal sponsor Ground Game retains an unusually low fee of 3.25% to defray their costs.

No. Those of us who run Focus for Democracy, Aaron Frank, Julia Chang Frank, Liza Finkelstein, and Sandy Newman, do not, and have never, taken any compensation for our work for the network. We are all donors to the causes we recommend.
